 Hannover (Germany) - Samsung will unveil a new LCD that can be connected to a PC via an integrated USB port, according to an article published at heise.de. When connected to a PC via USB, the 19" Syncmaster 940UX appears as a removable storage device in Windows, which contains a setup routine that installs a virtual graphics card as well as a USB display driver, Heise reports. While a USB-connected LCD cannot be used as primary monitor, the new approach allows users to connect up to six LCDs (and up to three virtual graphics cards) as extended monitors to their PC.

Samsung and Marvell said the companies will be first to offer harddrives supporting native 3.0 Gbit I/O transaction capabilities in addition to SATA Native Command Queuing (NCQ). The harddrives are based on Marvell"s 88i6525 System-on-a-Chip (SoC) and were shocased at the Intel Developer Forum in early September of this year. The 88i6525"s read channel core can run up to 1.25Gb/s, which is another industry first for a desktop HDD. The companies provided no information when products could be expected top be available. 
Sunnyvale (CA) - AMD heats up the race for the fastest 64-bit workstation and server processor with two models clocked at 2.6 GHz and targeted at two and up to eight-processor systems. Intel will bring its multiprocessor 64-bit Xeon chip into the game within "a couple of weeks". The launch of the new Opterons comes about one week after Intel"s announcement to bring its Xeon MP (multi-processor) as an extension of the existing 64-bit Xeon DP (dual-processor) to the market. The 252 and 852 chips support one-way and up to 8-way workstation and server systems and were announced in conjunction with the AMD-8132 HyperTransport PCI-X 2.0 tunnel. 
London - BitMicro introduced its new 3.5" Ultra320 SCSI solid-state drive using Flash memory. The ruggedized 155 GByte drive called the E-Disk made its debut at a military expo in London and can read/write data much more quickly than a traditional magnetic drive. Currently available to large corporations and governments, the new drive will not find its way to consumer hands anytime soon (unless you have truckloads of extra cash). The drive is a drop-in replacement for a traditional hard-drive. Using the Ultra320 SCSI interface it can perform 12,500 operations per second at a 42 microsecond access time. In addition the drive uses approximately 10 to 20 times less electricity than a traditional hard-drive.
