Last week, Tom"s Hardware reported that an escalating number of Barracuda 7200.11, ES.2 SATA and DiamondMax 22 drives were failing due to a fatal flaw in the firmware which caused the drive to suddenly lock itself up and prevent the BIOS from even detecting it in the system. There is no way of fixing this unfortunately, and the drive needs to be returned for replacement.

Hard drive manufacture appear to be increasingly under pressure from advances in the solid state disk arena, with some manufacturers claiming that 512 GB drives will be available with current technologies. At least from a capacity view, NAND flash seems to be surpassing 1.8" hard drives and closing the gap with 2.5" drives.

WD Updates 7200 Rpm 2.5" Hard Drives.

WD today announced its Scorpio Black series of 2.5" hard drives, offering up to 320 GB capacity and a disk rotation speed of 7200 rpm. The drives consumes about 2.5 watts during read/write processes, which is about 20% more than the power consumption of low-power 2.5" drives. Idle power consumption is about 0.85 watts.

Toshiba aims to have 50% of SSD market share by 2011.
